Types of Gliding
There are two main types of gliding -
thermal and slope soaring. Both make use of rising air
to keep an un-powered model in the air.
Thermal soaring makes use of rising warm air
called "thermals". A thermal soaring glider would
typically be launched from a flat field using a long elastic
"bungee" or electric winch.

Slope soaring takes advantage of rising air
that occurs when when hits the face of a slope and is forced
upwards. Slope soaring gliders tend to be hand
launched into the wind, off the top of a hill.

The type of gliding that you embark upon is
likely to be dictated by your geographical location and the
predominant activity of your local club.
